With 360,000 seniors or about 13% of the population, Kansas ranks about average for the percentage of seniors compared to the total state population. Kansas is a very diverse state for seniors with a dramatic difference between the metro and rural areas. The larger cities have a variety of senior living options including assisted living facilities, in-home care and nursing homes. Remote areas may a very limited selection. Although most seniors choose an assisted living facility or other senior living option based on location, other factors can have a big impact on the sustainability of assisted living. Since most seniors enter an assisted living facility after a disorienting incident like a stroke or serious fall, staying in a familiar area is important for a short-term stay.

For more long term stays in an assisted living facility, other factors like sustained visitation from friend and family are more critical. Access to state-of-the-art health care can also be a big factor. Larger areas may have special senior care programs, cancer treatment facilities, and other senior activities. The amenities of the city compounded with the amenities of the  facility can make life in an assisted living facility or other senior living community much more enjoyable.

The Kansas Department on Aging conducts routine assisted living facility inspections every 12 to 15 months. Inspection reports are typically posted at the assisted living facility but they can also be requested by calling 785-296-4986 or 800-842-0078. There is a charge for copies of reports.
