Details About Brookdale Flagstaff

Brookdale Flagstaff, formerly Emeritus at Flagstaff, is a Flagstaff, AZ assisted living and Alzheimer’s Caremunity for seniors. We are conveniently located close to the I-40 and I-17 Interchange. All the conveniences of a small city are nearby – grocery stores, restaurants and of course, Wal-Mart, where we take residents weekly. There are several medical facilities in the area including Flagstaff Medical Center – just north of downtown, about three miles from our community – and two skilled nursing facilities. Our community is also close to the Museum of Northern Arizona and an hour north of the Cliff Castle Casino in Camp Verde – both favorite destinations with our residents.

Located 7,000 feet above sea level, Flagstaff has four glorious seasons – including winter weather blessed by many sunny days that melt any accumulating snow quickly. This region is known for its natural beauty, bordering the Colorado Plateau, the western edge of the largest contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest in the United States and close to the Mongollon Rim. The city is also adjacent to Mount Elden, just south of the San Francisco Peaks, and just an hour south of the Grand Canyon.

A Wonderful Selection

Brookdale Flagstaff is a full-service community catering to both assisted living and memory care residents. Our assisted living community has 45 senior apartments available in five sizes, ranging from efficiencies, studios, alcoves, one bedrooms and two bedrooms from 312 square feet to 750 square feet. All apartments include a kitchenette with sink, cabinets and drawers, microwave and refrigerator; residents are welcome to bring in their own coffee makers.

Apartments also provide wall-to-wall carpeting, spacious bathrooms – all the same size, regardless of the square footage – and each with a shower equipped with safety bars and an alert button. Residents are also given LifeLine emergency call pendants to wear. They simply press the button should they need assistance. All apartments have individually controlled heating and temperature, giving residents the flexibility to adjust the temperature to suit their preferences. In addition, all units feature large windows, with some looking out onto our beautiful garden area, others facing the tree-lined front street and those in the back having views of a naturally landscaped area behind our community. Small pets are welcome so long as the resident is able to take care of the pet themselves.

Residents also have access to several lovely common areas, including a spacious lobby with seating – a favorite place for residents to gather. Just off the lobby is a library library with a large, stone, gas fireplace and many books, which residents are welcome to borrow. Activities, such as our morning exercise program, card games, scrabble and dominos, are typically held in our spacious community room featuring large windows and lots of greenery. A TV room with a large-screen television is located upstairs and is often where residents watch movies and play bingo. In the back of our building is a lovely fenced-in garden area with a ramp down to a walking path that meanders among the ponderosa pines. Often residents can be seen working side-by-side with a group of master gardeners, who volunteer at our community through the Master Gardener Program of Flagstaff.

In 2005, we turned one of our three wings into a memory care neighborhood of 13 apartments. It looks just like our assisted living community, with the same choice in apartments and the same spacious private bathrooms. Four units are private and the remaining are available as companion living suites – the ideal option for families who want their loved ones to have the friendship of a roommate, while reducing their costs. Memory care residents have their own dining room, which doubles as an activities room. We are one big family here, with apartment doors open during the day, and residents out and about, involved in activities, engaging with one another or simply enjoying music and the companionship of our loving staff.

Strong, Caring Professional Relationships

With several home health agencies in town, our residents and their families can choose whomever they’d like to work with. We can always make recommendations, but it’s always up to them. Whichever agency they choose, therapists provide services right here, in the convenience of the resident’s own home. They can work with residents in their apartments, in the hallways and common areas or along the walking paths if appropriate. After each visit, the therapist provides a report that is kept in the resident’s chart and referred to by our nurse.

In addition, we have a physician and a physician’s assistant who alternate house calls weekly. This is an especially great option for residents moving into our community from out of the area, as they typically do not have a doctor in town. Many of our residents like the convenience of this service. In fact, about 60 percent choose to see our physician staff. Of course, if they need to see a specialist, there are many throughout the Flagstaff area and we can steer residents in the right direction as necessary. Hospice is also welcome to come into our community. There are two agencies in town. In some cases they provide palliative care, allowing residents who may need extra care to stay in their own homes for more extensive periods before passing on.

Our Staff

Brookdale Flagstaff prides itself on maintaining a wonderful and stable employee group. Part of this comes from our staff have specifically sought out positions working with seniors – their true passion in life.
