Stella Maris is a nonprofit organization sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. In the Spirit of Mercy, the Stella Maris staff provides a comprehensive range of housing and health services for the care of the elderly, the sick, the injured and the dying. Stella Maris was one of the first hospices in Maryland.
Stella Maris, named for Mary, Star of the Sea, was dedicated in 1953 by Archbishop Francis P. Keough who invited the Sisters of Mercy to administer the retirement home. As the original residents began to age in the 1960s, additional services were added to meet their needs. With the addition of the Pangborn Wing in 1966, Stella Maris answered a growing need for nursing home care and was able to provide for more than 400 residents. The opening of St. Elizabeth Hall in 1980, the hospice program in 1983, and the Knott Wing in 1992 have dramatically changed the face of the Stella Maris campus.
Today, as part of Mercy Health Services, Stella Maris reaches out to residents in the Baltimore area with long-term care, rehabilitation, home care, hospice care and residential services. The competent and compassionate care provided by the Sisters of Mercy serves residents from retirement through the end of life.
