Details About Brookdale Eddy Pond West

Brookdale Eddy Pond West, formerly Emeritus at Eddy Pond The Lodge is an assisted livingmunity in Auburn, MA for seniors.  Our community is centrally located just off Route 20, with easy access to I-395 and all that Auburn offers including the Auburn Mall, Wal-Mart, grocery stores, banks and restaurants. Once a week, we set aside a shopping day, when we take residents out and about to do their errands. Three hospitals are within an easy drive – St. Vincent’s, UMASS Memorial Hospital and UMASS University Hospital in Worchester. Auburn is a popular destination for shopping, working and living; and in fact, many of our residents are from the immediate area. You may even recognize a former acquaintance should you choose to come for a tour.

A Wonderful Selection

The Lodge has 108 apartments ranging from studios, larger L-shaped alcove studios with a separate area for a bed, and one and two-bedroom apartments. All of our apartments are bright, light and extremely spacious. The bathrooms are noticeably large, with walk-in showers and ample room to accommodate a wheelchair or walker. The bathrooms include an emergency call system should a resident require assistance. All apartments also have a kitchenette with a sink, cabinets, refrigerator and space for a microwave. Some have a balcony, some have a patio and many have views of Eddy Pond. In addition, the apartments are equipped for cable and offer wall-to-wall carpeting. Individually controlled heat and air conditioning, depending on the season, is available.

The Lodgeoffers a TV lounge on the first floor along with our main dining room and a private dining room available for family celebrations or special occasions. In addition, there’s a bright, spacious activities area on the second floor and a library, pool table and hair salon on the third floor. A lovely porch with welcoming rocking chairs and a patio extending the length of the front of the building, equipped with tables and chairs, give residents the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors during warmer months.

The Woods is our slightly smaller community with 79 studio, alcove and one-bedroom apartments, and includes the same amenities as the Lodge. When visitors walk into the Woods, they are often struck by the dramatic entrance with its soaring, open lobby area that stretches up two-stories, along with its comfortable living space featuring a fireplace, piano and array of couches and chairs. The two-story open dining room is equally impressive with its wall of windows overlooking Eddy Pond, as well as several beautiful china cabinets and a small stage. Just off the dining room is a private dining room similar to the Lodge. The Woods also features an activities room with sliding doors opening out to a balcony, as well as a library and lounge area on the second floor. And a covered porch with screens and rocking chairs creates a relaxing, shaded retreat.

Our memory care community is located on the first floor of both buildings. This community has recently undergone a major renovation and features a beautiful new kitchen area and activities room.

Strong, Caring Professional Relationships

Excella Healthcare is located right here at The Lodge, where they have a well-equipped and spacious therapy gym located on the third floor. Their caring and expert staff provides a full range of rehabilitation services including physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as some nursing care and counseling services. Excella staff also offers its services in a designated area on the second floor of the Woods, as well as in the resident’s apartment when necessary. The convenience of Excella is available to all residents, but residents always have the option to bring in their own therapists. We also work with a variety of area hospice companies and contract with a podiatrist who regularly visits residents. In addition, Onsite Dental – a mobile dental service – makes periodic visits to our community. Our staff also takes residents to their doctors’ appointments on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Our Staff

We always ask new residents why they selected Brookdale Eddy Pond West. A typical answer is “Your people were so nice and friendly. When I came for a tour, there were at least three people who welcomed me and offered their help.” Like the Auburn community, our staff members are true New Englanders – down-to-earth, warm and welcoming. They take the time to get to know residents. For example, our wait-staff, many of whom have been with us for years, doesn’t need to ask residents about their beverage preferences. They know how they take their coffee. They know their likes and dislikes.

In addition, our management team and nursing staff; which includes one Resident Care Director for each building, two wellness nurses at the Woods, and three wellness nurses at the Lodge, have a great deal of experience in senior living and memory care. And all staff members undergo extensive training, including a comprehensive orientation program for new employees, state-mandated monthly in-services and ongoing training with through Brookdale. Skills, experience, and commitment to take care of our residents, are the hallmarks of the Brookdale Eddy Pond West staff.

A Wonderful, Active Lifestyle

Our days at Brookdale Eddy Pond West typically start with an exercise program and end with a community movie. Between that time, our two Life Enrichment Directors, one for each building, plan all sorts of activities to appeal to a wide range of interests. These include poker groups, bingo, card games, puzzles, arts and crafts, weekly shopping days, occasional outings to local restaurants, church services and wonderful entertainment from local Auburn groups. For example, during a recent holiday season, students from a local school gave a concert for residents. We also hold a birthday party each month for all residents born that month.

And for just about every holiday, we have community-wide parties to which our family members are always invited. Last year, our residents celebrated New Year’s Eve in grand style. The dining room was packed with family and friends who danced the night away. Throughout the warmer months, the community has occasional barbecues, as well as special events, such as an antique car show.

Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community

Brookdale Eddy Pond West works closely with the local Alzheimer’s Association, planning various fundraisers throughout the year to benefit the organization, including participation in the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s. We are also working to establish a stronger relationship with the Auburn Senior Center, which provides a wide range of activities in which our residents are welcome to participate. In addition, local experts occasionally come into our community to share their expertise. For example, the Auburn police chef talked to residents about fire safety and a local photographer set up his photographs and explained his craft to residents.

Fine Dining

Three meals a day are included in the monthly rent, beginning with a full breakfast. Residents can choose from made-to-order eggs, hot and cold cereals, sweet rolls and such other selections as waffles and pancakes. Lunch is our primary meal of the day and typically includes a choice of two full entrees, from roasted chicken to steak tips to sweet and sour pork, as well as heart-healthy choices. Dinner is a lighter fare and includes sandwiches, quiches, traditional New England favorites like hot dogs and beans, grilled cheese and tomato soup and salads. Snacks are available throughout the day and we can accommodate some special diets such as pureed, mechanically-chopped or a diabetic-controlled menu. Our desserts, which are served at lunch and dinner, are wonderful. In fact, the most frequent comment we hear from residents is that our food is so good, they are gaining weight.

Our memory care residents are served the same menu as assisted living, along with three major snacks a day, including easy-to-eat finger foods. Colorful contrasting plates help with depth-perception issues, making it easier for residents to see the selections on their plates. And now, with our beautiful new kitchen at The Lodge, we have more space to prepare plates for each individual resident.
