CUTTING COSTS: below freezing outside, 59 degrees inside
I called to say goodnight to Mom. She is elderly, over 100. The heat was off in the building and had been most of the day. This happened last winter, so she expected that they would fix the boiler and then go room-to-room to reset the units' HVAC (who knows how old the system is, but the hallways have pretty, new paint and furniture). I called the Forum and was informed that the boiler was, indeed, back up and running and that they would be checking in on every room. That was 10 p.m. Should I make the 2-hour round trip to take her a space heater? Mom said absolutely not. We didn't, and she went to bed fully dressed with extra comforters. Mom called at 7 a.m. The temperature outside was in the teens. The temperature in her room had fallen even lower. One of the Forum employees had JUST LEFT. There is no telling how many folks were called in, if any, to reset HVAC equipment in the apartments. NO SENIOR should live in a facility with a repaired boiler but NO HEAT for 9 ADDITIONAL hours. The management at the facility appears very good at cutting costs on things that don't "show" BUT very poor at protecting vulnerable senior residents. I called the CEO (in Massachusetts). He did not return my call.
