Emotional abuse: intimidation, humiliation
My mother was living in this facility but is not living there now. She will not go back. She tells me of several incidents where she was humiliated. (She does not have dementia.) One such incident, which was witnessed by ALL in the dining room, was when she was shamed for using too much sugar on her breakfast cereal. The RN who runs the place held up the sugar container and loudly admonishing my 91-year old mother in front of all. After-wards Mother hung her head into her cereal and ate the remainder of her breakfast with her head bowed into the bowl. Several residents and also employees told me about it. They were upset. When I confronted the RN, I was met with a barrage of loud, defensive language, and a lot of blame directed toward my mother. It was not possible to have a rational conversation about it. I understand now, from adult children of former residents, that this is not new behavior on the part of this person. I was approached by several other employees and urged to file a report. They are reluctant to do so, as are other residents, for fear of retaliation. I myself witnessed a resident being scolded loudly, told to "get out of this room!!!" The resident was crying uncontrollably but the berating continued. I personally know three other adult children of former residents who also have similar experiences and are willing to come forth.
