Ourmunity is located in the pretty town of Friendswood which was originally a Quaker settlement. We’re close to churches of all denominations as well as several hospitals including Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, Christus St. John Hospital and Clear Lake Rehabilitation Hospital and they’re all within five to ten miles.
With our close proximity to Houston, just 20 miles to the northwest and Galveston which is the same distance to the southeast, we have easy access to the best of all worlds with beautiful Texas beaches and the booming metropolis of Houston. We make sure residents can take full advantage of the area, whether it’s visiting NASA, taking in an Astros football game, shopping at the Bay Brook Mall or weekly trips to Wal-Mart, Target and area grocery stores. We also take occasional field trips to Brennam, about 70 miles north, to see the Blue Bonnets in glorious bloom during the springtime. Trips to Blue Bell Creamery, fishing excursions and outings to the Galveston Moody Gardens are also big favorites with our residents.
A Wonderful Selection
Our community offers a full range of accommodations to meet the needs of all seniors, giving residents the flexibility to be able to easily move between communities as their health needs change. Located in a separate building are 12 studio and one-bedroom senior apartments for our independent residents. All apartments offer a full kitchen and bathroom, weekly housekeeping, three meals a day, all utilities, transportation and complimentary use of a washer and dryer. In many cases, our residents first move into the assisted living community, often from rehabilitation and as they get stronger, they have the option (if space is available) to move into our independent community.
Should an independent resident require more assistance, our single-story assisted living community is right next door. We offer 70 apartments in four configurations which are studio, studio deluxe with a kitchenette, a larger 350-square-foot studio and a 600-square-foot one-bedroom unit with a kitchenette. All senior apartments have windows and ceiling fans, individual temperature control, wall-to-wall carpeting and bathrooms with step-in showers. An emergency call system is located in the bathroom and living area.
Assisted living offers three lovely common areas, a living room with a baby grand piano, large-screen television, comfy sofas, a sitting area and mini library. There is also a second living area where residents play poker as well as an activities room.
Our memory care neighborhood is located in a secured area but connected to assisted living. It offers 30 apartments in two sizes which include a small studio and a larger studio with a private bathroom and shower. Each apartment has wall-to-wall carpeting, individual temperature control and can be shared by two residents as a “friendship suite.” The memory care neighborhood offers one main common area with a television and sofa and two additional sitting areas, one with an organ and piano, the other with a television.
Strong, Caring, Professional Relationships
While we welcome any home health agency to provide services to our residents, we offer physical, occupation and speech therapy services provided by the Westin Group, located right here in our building. For the convenience of our residents, therapists will provide services in their apartments or in the common areas as appropriate. In addition, Southwest Home Health is here in our community and can provide a higher level of nursing care as needed. We also welcome any hospice agency to provide onsite services as required by residents. Whenever a provider works with one of our residents, we are always kept up to date on the status of the resident.
Our Staff
Several of our staff members have been with Brookdale Friendswood since it opened in 1999 and the majority have been here for ten-plus years. The reason for such longevity is simple. Our caregivers love the job they do and they live by the Brookdale pledge, “Our family is committed to yours”. They truly are dedicated to our community and take on their jobs with tremendous passion and love for the residents. In fact, we just conducted a survey of our residents and their families and many said they felt that the staff truly loved them and treated them with a great deal of respect.
In addition, our staff includes four nurses who provide coverage seven days a week. Our Resident Care Director, who is a registered nurse, oversees the entire community. We also have a dedicated nurse in memory care and a wellness nurse who works weekends and evenings. In addition, our Executive Director is a nurse. With the skills and expertise of our nursing staff, we can often identify problems before accidents happen or before a resident becomes seriously ill. Our memory care neighborhood has its own dedicated staff trained in our Join Their Journey program.
A Wonderful, Active Lifestyle
Every morning, we start the day with an exercise program, followed by word games, bingo, card games and arts and crafts. A local artist comes into our community to teach all kinds of art classes and even our men love to take her beading classes. We also do special activities for our ladies, whether it’s getting their nails done, taking our Lunch Bunch out for a leisurely lunch or making a “snowball” run to our local snowball store. We also have designated shopping days, doctor days and grocery store trips.
Throughout the month, our full-time Life Enrichment Director coordinates all kinds of entertainment bringing in such popular musical groups as the Over the Hill Gang. We also invite performers to come in and we had a volunteer come in and teach the residents how to hula dance plus other volunteers who simply love to visit our residents and spend time with them. In addition, we have weekly bible studies, church services and sing-alongs and many family-oriented events, such as picnics, potlucks, a Mother’s Day Tea, Easter egg hunts and of course, families are always invited to our holiday dinners.
Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community
Our senior living community partners closely with the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and participates in its annual Memory Walk and some of our residents and their family members also join us for the walk. We hold occasional fundraisers for the association such as a recent spaghetti dinner or cake cook-off. And we coordinate monthly support groups for the families of our memory care residents or anyone in the Friendswood area who needs support in caring for a loved one with a memory impairment. In addition, our local home health agencies give educational talks at our community on such topics as assessing fall risks, stroke prevention, managing medication and understanding the Alzheimer’s disease process.
Fine Dining
Our Dining Services Director has been here ever since the building opened nearly 12 years ago. He is a master in creating great tasting food without using a lot of salt. Three meals a day are served restaurant style. Breakfast includes made-to-order eggs, all kinds of breakfast meats, french toast, hot and cold cereal, pancakes, juice and coffee. Lunch is our main meal of the day and includes a main entrée and alternative. Our chef likes to cater to our residents’ preferences for local cuisine. He makes great Tex Mex and just about the best pot roast you’ll ever have. We also serve two to three snacks a day including cookies in the morning, ice cream in the afternoon and we even have our own ice cream café.
Our memory care residents are served the same food, but they’re served in their own dining room and on colorful plates that make it easier for them to see their meals. They also have three substantial snacks a day which is basically a total of six meals as people with memory impairments tend to lose weight due to their short attention span. We have one area in the dining room designated for residents who we know won’t get up while eating and another area for residents who tend to wander and walk around and need more assistance at meal time.
