Medicare helps cover short periods of nursing care but is usually only sufficient to cover a small percentage of the cost of extended stays. To activate Medicare coverage, patients must have been hospitalized for at least three days prior to transferring to a nursing home. The program fully covers 20 days of nursing care. For the next 80 days of care, the patient must pay a daily copayment fee. After those 100 days, Medicare coverage stops.
