Details About Brookdale Potomac

Brookdale Potomac, formerly Emeritus at Potomac, is a Potomac, MD "senior-living-solutions/assisted-living/">Assisted Living and href="senior-living-solutions/memory-care/">Alzheimer’s Care munity for seniors. We are conveniently located at the intersection of Tuckerman Lane and Seven Locks Road just five minutes from I-270 and I-495. We are located in a vibrant area with easy access to Washington, DC and all that this area has to offer. Our residents enjoy several excursions each week that include shopping trips, outings to nearby parks, including Great Falls Park and Dumberton Oaks Parks and visits to the Hillwood Museum, the Textile Museum, The National Gallery, Smithsonian, the Air and Space Museum and the Women’s Art Museum. We also attend concerts at Strathsmore Concert Hall. We enjoy lunch outings at one of many restaurants close by. Transportation is provided in our own air conditioned mini-bus.

A Wonderful Selection

Our quiet three-story retirement community is located in a park-like setting and offers a total of 104 senior apartments with seven different floor plans ranging from economical suites to one- bedroom deluxe suites with a den and two-bedroom units. We also offer friendship suites where two residents, who either don’t want to live alone or wish to save on rent, can share accommodations. All senior apartments provide a kitchenette with refrigerator and freezer, a spacious private wheelchair-accessible bathroom and all of the safety amenities you would expect including rails, pull cords and night lights. Each senior apartment is beautifully laid out and spacious offering large windows and wall-to-wall carpeting. Residents are welcome to bring in their own furniture or we can provide it for them. The apartments can also be painted a special color and residents can decorate any way they wish.

Our beautiful sunroom has floor-to-ceiling windows and opens onto our outside courtyard. This is often the location for both our Shabbat and Catholic services. We also have a spacious and bright living room where one of our three pianos is located. A computer room is on the second floor and open to all residents to use any time. Our spacious dining room is used for activities and for socializing, particularly in the cooler winter months. Just off the dining room is a private dining area which residents can use when their families visit and there is access to an exterior enclosed courtyard. Our bridge group typically meets in our library which also provides a computer with internet access. Our senior living community also offers a multipurpose theater room with large-screen television used for our exercise programs and sing-alongs as well as movie nights and presentations. For the convenience of residents, we also have a barber shop/beauty salon on-site.

Strong, Caring, Professional Relationships

Our retirement community has its own medical director who comes here on a regular basis to oversee our nursing staff and to provide individual care. For the convenience of our residents, we also work with FOX Rehab which provides physical, occupational and speech therapy in a dedicated room in our building. They see residents by appointment and can be available five days a week as necessary. In addition, we offer the services of a mobile dentist once a month as well as a podiatrist who also comes to our community monthly. Labs, x-rays and prescription updates can also be handled onsite.

Our Staff

We have a staff of about 50 employees including eight members on our management team. And unlike some assisted living facilities, we employ Licensed Practical Nurses to provide medication management and general care. They work diligently to continually assess the health needs of each resident and provide regular updates to their loved ones as appropriate. Our LPNs also check in on residents every day and are trained to spot warning signs that might suggest a resident needs additional medical care.

A Wonderful, Active Lifestyle

Our senior living community combines elegance with a homey family-oriented atmosphere. From our lovely sunroom with floor-to-ceiling windows to our country kitchen and café, every aspect of our community is designed for the comfort and convenience of our residents. Our focus is always our residents’ health, well-being and happiness and this directs everything we do. They help us plan activities and trips. In fact, all activities are resident-approved. They decide exactly how their apartment is furnished and decorated and their care plan is customized to their exact needs. Creating a community around our residents needs and providing comprehensive on-site rehabilitation services are among the key reasons so many of our residents have called Emeritus at Potomac home for more than a decade.

As we like to tell our new residents, “you have to make a real effort to be bored at our community”. We have a very active social program that includes bingo, Fit after Fifty-T and Chair Fitness programs, Ti Chi with a Grand Master, holiday celebrations including both Jewish and Christian holidays, movie nights, discussions about food, crafts, games including spy games, word games, trivia and Jeopardy, bible studies, Gift of Torah discussions, religious services including Shabbat services, Catholic communion and Catholic mass, art shows, lobby socials, and at least six concerts are held at our community every month.

Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community

We have a staff member who, along with our memory care director, is certified by the Alzheimer’s Association to facilitate support groups. These groups provide education and support to help our family members cope with the changes their loved ones are experiencing. The community is also welcome and we plan to have our program listed with the local Alzheimer’s Association to encourage drop-ins.

Brookdale Potomac is strongly connected to the community. Every month, there are several community groups including our local Girl Scouts, a breast-feeding group, a professional networking group and Overeaters’ Club that host their get-togethers here. Residents are always invited to attend.

Fine Dining

It’s not surprising that so many outside groups from all over the Northeast choose to hold their events here. Our dining services director does a fantastic job and our food gets rave reviews. All meals are served restaurant-style in which residents are waited on by our professional wait staff whose sole job is to serve food. The menu changes every day and offers many options including an alternative entrée selection. Residents can also let us know if there is a specific type of food they would particularly enjoy and we will do our best to accommodate their request. We offer two seatings for each meal and if a resident misses their regular seating, they are always welcome to come earlier or later. If necessary, we can also bring meals to their apartment or for residents who wish to have a private dinner with their families, our staff will serve them in our private dining room. Our dining services director can also cater to any dietary restriction including sugar-free, carbohydrate-controlled, gluten-free, vegetarian and mechanical soft. A dietician works hand-in-hand with the dining services director to review the needs of each resident and ensure their nutritional requirements are met. All kinds of snacks and beverages are available throughout the building, any time, day or night.
