This path will often give patients access to physical, occupational, respiratory or speech therapy. The goal of a short-term stay is to improve a patient’s condition so they can move to lesser inclusive levels of care or return to their previous lives. Long-term care is focused on managing the health of patients with moderate to severe mental or physical impairments. Doctors and nurses are on call to give continuous monitoring and to perform medical procedures such as wound treatment, medicine dosage and blood work. Non-medical caregivers help long-term patients if they have trouble with activities of daily living, including dressing, washing, eating and walking. Nursing homes offer long-term patients a level of companionship through social workers who often stay with patients to talk, eat and do activities.

Most long-term stays are the result of the declining state of a medical condition. Short-term stays occur because patients have been hospitalized due to a medical event. The patient’s physician or specialist will approve and require a nursing care stay if further treatment is necessary. Getting the highest quality hospital care, under the circumstances, is important because a hospital stay is the first period of recovery. In Akron the best hospitals, based on patients’ prior hospital experiences, are Akron General Medical Center and Summa Health Systems Hospitals.

Akron’s nursing care costs fall more than 10 percent above the national average and a bit more than the Ohio state median. Semi-private and private SNF rooms bear a monthly cost of $6,737 and $7,346, respectively. Other senior care costs are also expensive relative to the national average. Homemaker services, home health aide and adult day health care cost $3,432, $3,527 and $1,083 per month, respectively. Assisted living facility rooms cost $4,404 per month.
